I trained harder then ever for my first marathon, but like last year I was still over five hours for the first effort of the year. But many factors had a play: I had a small meal the night before, I started out too fast, it was way hilly, the headwinds were 20 mph and I just did not have the normal strength to kick it in! With Discovery on the horizon, my last over 5 hour run last year, I plan on being smarter and see where the cards fall.
I stuck with the 4:30 pace group for 15 miles, I should have taken a bit slower but they were on the pace I had intended anyway, so go figure. The next 6 miles were rolling hills with the awful winds, it played a toll on many as I noticed others times were slower then normal, but 17 minutes slower then the 2008 TCM time was not what I expected when I woke up. I finished a very difficult marathon while not training for hills, so I am happy!
I finely got to pace Annie for 11 miles, grin. She shot past me and I find it funny when runners don't sign up and use the marathon as a training run, but she is the exception to the rule of course. :-) Tony (the RD and maniac #3) put on another first class event and gave maniac finishers a very cool maniac finisher medal for the second year in a row. The maniac reunion was a blast, it's always nice to see friends and new members.
